SSAB today marked the start of construction of its new quenching line in Oxelösund. The investment of SEK 3.3 billion, announced in May 2026, will expand capacity for SSAB’s advanced high-strength wear and protection steels. Production is planned to begin in 2030.

It’s called Hardox® wear plate since that’s how it started more than 50 years ago – as wear plates of a uniquely hard and tough abrasion-resistant steel. Now it’s 2026 and not a day too soon Hardox® pipes and tubes are at your service, locally available through Abraservice Ibérica S.L. They come with all the trusted properties of the wear steel, such as reliable workshop performance and through-thickness hardness for predictable service life.

Steel used in icebreakers is subject to exceptionally demanding requirements. Icebreakers operate in some of the harshest environments in the world. They face constant impacts and are exposed to uneven ice masses, forces, and collisions.

Norwegian shipping company AQS Rederi is expanding its investment in electrified vessels by ordering four additional service vessels from Salthammer Båtbyggeri in Norway. The order now comprises a total of six vessels built using steel supplied by Tibnor. 

The long-term safety cooperation between ESL Shipping and the port of SSAB’s Raahe site is visible in everyday operations through open dialogue, joint exercises, and continuous development of working practices. Close collaboration helps anticipate risks and strengthens safety in demanding operating environments.
